2Z+GK of 2./NJG 6, Groß Sachsenheim/Germany,
September 1944
During
September, the overall effectiveness of the Nachtjagd was further
declining with claims of just 82 abschüssen led against
the 6,400 Bomber Command sorties directed at the Third Reich.
Town after town was devastated: Darmstadt, Frankfurt, Stuttgart,
Berlin, Karlsruhe, Bremerhaven, Mönchengladbach, Düsseldorf,
Münster, Kaiserslautern and Braunschweig. This was a strategy
that for each month came to resemble a pure act of vengeance
against the German population. This was especially true since
strategic objectives were by now difficult to discern, particularly
when it came to destroying town and city centers. This policy
was in fact more in line with what Nazi propaganda called "Terror-Bombing",
which in retrospect is closer to the truth than portrayed by
the Allies. This aircraft and its crew was one of the many that
tried desperately to even the balance and defend their homeland
and people. It was equipped with the standard Fug 220 SN-2b AI
radar, as well as muzzle blast suppressors to reduce the potential
blinding effects of the Mk 108 30mm cannons when fired at night.
